In old Sicilian country houses, among thick lava-stone walls and sun-kissed courtyards, there were places where children were strictly forbidden to go near. They were not dark rooms or old attics, but wells and water cisterns.
And guarding those mysterious, deep places dwelt a legendary creature, feared by generations of little Sicilians: the Marabbecca.
A creature from the depths
No one has ever been able to accurately describe her true appearance. To some, she was an old witch with seaweed hair and glowing eyes; to others, a slimy, shapeless presence lurking just beneath the dark water's surface; to others still, a sort of aquatic witch ready to ambush in the dark.
Her very name, Marabbecca, sounds dark and heavy, evoking something that moves stealthily where sunlight never reaches. In the stories passed down by grandparents, leaning carelessly over the edge of an open well or cistern was enough to risk being caught in her invisible grip.
The loving lie of the grandparents
But behind the fear of the monster lay actually one of the oldest and most ingenious pedagogical inventions of Sicilian farming families.
In times past, open wells and cisterns for collecting rainwater were indispensable for daily life, but they posed a mortal danger for children running and playing freely in the courtyards. There were no safety fences or modern covers. So, to protect the little ones from a real risk, parents and grandparents invented the myth of the Marabbecca: a terrifying warning that turned the well into a forbidden place, keeping children far away from danger through the power of a tale.
The charm of old rural homes
Even today, visiting ancient country houses, bagli, or historic farmsteads in Sicily, one often comes across those old stone wells, covered with heavy iron grates or protected by low tuff walls.
Looking at them, one still senses the charm of an era when life was made of essential things, respect for nature, and ancient stories capable of combining fear with wisdom. The Marabbecca was simply a way of saying that a home and its most hidden spaces must be lived in with care, guarded, and protected.
