February 4th: The Dawn Meeting and the External Procession

While the first day is dedicated to institutional decorum, February 4th is the day of pure emotion. At the first light of dawn, thousands of "Cittadini" (devotees) dressed in traditional white tunics flood the Cathedral for the Messa dell’Aurora (Dawn Mass). The contrast between the candid white of the "sacchi" and the shimmer of the gems covering the reliquary bust, beneath the high vaults of the nave, creates an ethereal atmosphere.

Immediately following the mass, the Giro Esterno (External Procession) begins. The silver fercolo, a masterpiece of goldsmithing, traverses the city's symbolic landmarks:

  • Porta Uzeda and the Archi della Marina: Where faith meets 19th-century architecture.

  • The Walls of Charles V: A passage alongside the ancient Spanish fortifications that serves as a reminder of the city's deep historical roots.

  • The Salita dei Cappuccini: A test of strength and coordination as devotees pull the heavy float up the incline, in a ritual that blends physical toil with spiritual devotion.

Among the lesser-known traditions, the Ritual of the Three Keys stands out: the Saint’s treasure can only be opened by using three different keys simultaneously, held by three separate authorities. This is a symbol of collective guardianship, reflecting the same value we at Domus Sicilia place on the protection and stewardship of family heritage and estates.
